She smiled and said hi to the gas station attendant in greasy denim overalls and faded Castrol cap, one hand reaching for the fuel nozzle while the other pulled the red rag hanging from his pocket and wiped the sweat from his brow, as the Arizona sun gazed mercilessly down. “What’ll be ma’am” he drawled, kind reflective eyes sunk in a hard-looking face weathered in the desert heat, and accented by a scar running from the corner of his mouth back almost to his ear. “Fill er’ up Buddy” she said, her eyes moving up from the embroidered name tag stitched to the breast of Buddy’s coveralls to his face, and just catching his gaze shyly averting from her tan bare legs pretty under summer dress as she lithely moved into the shadow of the white van, providing shelter from the sun and a chance to survey the thoroughly unremarkable surrounding area; all scrub and brush and dirt and dust, and many-armed cactus plants rising up from the desert floor like great green prickly monoliths, warding away tourists and pointing the way to salvation. “Where y’all off to”, Buddy inquired gazing down at the dirt he was kicking around as he shuffled back and forth waiting patiently for his last dying breath and the white panel van to finish fueling….
